Why Do We Always Feel The Need To Win?

If you're anything like me, then sometimes your competitive nature gets the better of you...

The desire to win is often held in higher regards than even self-care, especially for a former athlete.

I can vividly remember the coaches yelling..."Faster", "Harder", "Stronger".  Weakness was not allowed...at least you better not show it.

So whether your sports career ended in middle school or as a professional athlete, I'm sure you can relate.

But what does this really do to our well being?

According to Lewis Howes and his book 'The Mask Of Masculinity" many former athletes hide their insecurities behind the "athlete mask".

The quote used at the beginning of the chapter by Wright Thompson reads, "He's a man who destroys himself running for a finish line that doesn't exist.".

The fear of not being good enough rears its ugly head, and as a result many stuck behind this mask begin to leave their values of selflessness behind and adopt an insatiable need to compete and win...

Often times at the cause of their own health.

So what can be done to remove the athlete mask?

As with anything in life according to Tony Robbins, the quality of life is determined by the quality of questions you ask yourself.

So if this sounds like you or someone you know, here are some great questions you can begin asking...

1.  What's Available To You When You Drop This Act?  What hidden (often artistic) talents have you been hiding?

2.  What other areas of your life will flourish when you decide to not constantly be competing?

3.  What happens when you find balance in the core areas of your life? (health, relationships, wealth, contribution, and spirituality)

4. How can I get what I want, and enjoy the process?

There is no magic pill to take to cure this.  It is merely small steps daily towards a brighter future.

Find something, such as jiu jitsu, that will allow you to compete in a healthy manner while simultaneously feeding the other core areas of your life!

Acheiving balance is the ultimate win!
